FRIENDS

Prov 17:17
17 A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. NIV** It is good to have friends. It has been said that if you only have 2 good friends at the end of your life, you are most blessed among men. My kids used to be bothered because they didn’t get any letters or mail from anyone and they would ask me why. I told them you’ve got to send a letter to get a letter. That is also true with friends. You have to start being a friend in order to get friends. Although I also believe that God sends at least one person in everyone’s lives to be a true friend and companion. I’m not talking about your spouse, even though I think everyone should be best friends with your spouse, (it makes things MUCH easier that way), I’m talking about someone who accepts you as you are but does not keep you as you are but pushes you to be more. (by the way, if you are married the big No No is to have a friend of the opposite sex…. It just starts problems and more than likely will end up with problems at home no matter what your spouse says….. there will be problems.) I’ve heard that the definition of a spouse is: the person you married to help you through the problems you wouldn’t have if you wouldn’t have married them in the first place.” J It’s always good to know that you have someone who will be there during the hard times and good times. So make friends… as many as you can…. But mostly be a friend to as many people as you can.

FUNNY FRIDAY (long but worth the read)

Pocket Taser Stun Gun, a great gift for the wife. A guy who purchased his lovely wife a pocket Taser for their anniversary submitted this.

Last weekend I saw something at Larry's Pistol & Pawn Shop that sparked my interest. The occasion was our 15th anniversary and I was looking for a little something extra for my wife Julie. What I came across was a 100,000-volt, pocket/purse-sized taser. The effects of the taser were supposed to be short lived, with no long-term adverse affect on your assailant, allowing her adequate time to retreat to safety....??

'WAY TOO COOL! Long story short, I bought the device and brought it home.

I loaded two AAA batteries in the darn thing and pushed the button. Nothing! I was disappointed. I learned, however, that if I pushed the button AND pressed it against a metal surface at the same time; I'd get the blue arc of electricity darting back and forth between the prongs.

AWESOME!!!

Unfortunately, I have yet to explain to Julie what that burn spot is on the face of her microwave.

Okay, so I was home alone with this new toy, thinking to myself that it couldn’t be all that bad with only two triple-A batteries, right?

There I sat in my recliner, my cat Gracie looking on intently (trusting little soul) while I was reading the directions and thinking that I really needed to try this thing out on a flesh & blood moving target.

I must admit I thought about zapping Gracie (for a fraction of a second) and thought better of it. She is such a sweet cat. But, if I was going to give this thing to my wife to protect herself against a mugger, I did want some assurance that it would work as advertised. Am I wrong?

So, there I sat in a pair of shorts and a tank top with my reading glasses perched delicately on the bridge of my nose, directions in one hand, and taser in another.

The directions said that a one-second burst would shock and disorient your assailant; a two-second burst was supposed to cause muscle spasms and a major loss of bodily control; a three-second burst would purportedly make your assailant flop on the ground like a fish out of water. Any burst longer than three seconds would be wasting the batteries? All the while I'm looking at this little device measuring about 5" long, less than 3/4 inch in circumference; pretty cute really and (loaded with two itsy, bitsy triple-A batteries) thinking to myself, "no possible way!"

What happened next is almost beyond description, but I'll do my best. I’m sitting there alone, Gracie looking on with her head cocked to one side as to say, "don't do it master," reasoning that a one- second burst from such a tiny little ole thing couldn't hurt all that bad. I decided to give myself a one-second burst just for heck of it. I touched the prongs to my naked thigh, pushed the button, and....

HOLY GEE WHIZ, WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION!

I'm pretty sure Jessie Ventura ran in through the side door, picked me up in the recliner, and then body slammed us both on the carpet, over and over and over again.

I vaguely recall waking up on my side in the fetal position, with tears in my eyes, body soaking wet, both nipples on fire, testicles nowhere to be found, with my left arm tucked under my body in the oddest position, and tingling in my legs?

The cat was standing over me making meowing sounds I had never heard before, licking my face, undoubtedly thinking to herself, "Do it again, stupid, do it again!"

Note: If you ever feel compelled to "mug" yourself with a taser, one note of caution: there is no such thing as a one-second burst when you zap yourself!

You will not let go of that thing until it is dislodged from your hand by a violent thrashing about on the floor.

A three-second burst would be considered conservative?

That hurt like crud!!! A minute or so later (I can't be sure, as time was a relative thing at that point), I collected my wits (what little I had left), sat up and surveyed the landscape. My bent reading glasses were on the mantel of the fireplace. How did they get up there??? My triceps, right thigh and both nipples were still twitching. My face felt like it had been shot up with Novocain, and my bottom lip weighed 88 lbs. I'm still looking for my testicles! I'm offering a significant reward for their safe return!! Still in shock!

P. S. My wife loved the gift, and now regularly threatens me with it!
"If you think Education is difficult, try being stupid."

STEAK OR SOUP?

Prov 15:17
A bowl of soup with someone you love is better than steak with someone you hate. NLT
** If it’s a choice, then I’ll take soup even though steak is one of my favorite foods. I have had dinner with people who didn’t like me nor did I like them and boy was it a LONG dinner. On the other hand I have eaten with people that I enjoy being around and it never seems like there is enough time to do all the visiting that I want. This verse speaks to my heart (if you ask my wife she’ll confirm this.) because I’ve never been a soup eater unless it’s filled with steak! J Eccl 2:24 A man can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, NIV I like this verse because it definitely describes me!

WISEGUY

Prov 11:30
30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life,
and he who wins souls is wise. NIV** Ok, so this is like one of my most favorite verses in the whole bible! It explains itself and there is not much one can say about it. I do know though, that Loves it when people preach the Gospel. Used to I never thought I was very wise. I didn’t feel like someone who made a lot of wise decisions. Then I came across this verse and I got excited. Being an evangelist at heart, I found out I am a VERY wise man and so can you if your hearts desire is to win the world to Jesus. How great it is to see someone who WAS bound by satan’s powers and in mental and spiritual prisons, be set free. It’s amazing just to look in their eyes and see the freedom flame burning brightly. People who are bound being set free….. there is no greater task and nothing more rewarding than this.

NOT BY WORKS

Rom 9:31-32
31 But the Jews, who tried so hard to get right with God by keeping the law, never succeeded. 32 Why not? Because they were trying to get right with God by keeping the law and being good instead of by depending on faith. NLT
** No matter how hard we try to please God by doing good things, it will never measure up to Jesus’ death on the cross. He paid the price in full and I find many people out there trying to do good things to atone for their sins. You can’t do enough good to pay for the short comings of fallen man. Most people when asked why they should make it to heaven answer, “Because I was a good person.” If this was the grounds for salvation then we are not on a level playing field. Those with physical defects could never measure up to those with great physical abilities. Saying salvation is by works or good works would be like saying that you can buy your way into heaven. Only the rich would be able to make it in and therefore only the physically healthy people would be only the ones who get into heaven. Thank God He saved us by GRACE. The definition of grace is “un-earned or un-merited favor.” Which means you can’t earn it nor do you deserve it! Romans chapter 5 says “while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” This is so simple a message that man has a hard time accepting it. It’s in our nature…. Have you ever got a un-earned gift from a person? Or how about a Christmas gift from someone whom you were not going to get a gift for? It makes you want to run out and buy a gift because you JUST CAN’T ACCEPT A FREE GIFT without paying something back. NOW, let’s put this into perspective. I can’t earn salvation by my works BUT I can be thankful enough for the FREE gift of God that I want to dedicate my life doing good things for Him because of what He has done for me. Is this scriptural? I’m glad you asked:
Eph 2:7-10 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. NIV

TEARS TUESDAY

FACE OF LOVE

Milton Berle once quipped that "all the world loves a lover -- exceptpeople who are waiting to use the phone."
Love has many faces. The faces we see so often are ones of infatuationand romance. We speak of "falling in love" and feel, too, as if we arein free fall. But the face of love I appreciate the most is notromance, as much as I am drawn to it, but one I can always count on tobe there. It is the face of devotion.
I see that face in the couple who were engaging in a dinner timedisagreement. To the children's amazement, their father jumped upfrom the table, grabbed two sheets of paper, and said to his wife,"Let's make a list of everything we don't like about each other."
She agreed and proceeded to write. He, meanwhile, sat and glowered. She looked up and he began to write. When she continued listingcomplaints, he stared across the table at her. Again, when she lookedup he put pen to paper and continued writing. He stopped to watchher, and every time she caught his eye, he wrote again.
They finally finished. "Let's exchange complaints," he said. Theygave each other their lists.
She glanced at his sheet and pleaded, "Give mine back!"
All down his sheet he had written: "I love you, I love you, I loveyou." Their children have always remembered that moment with humor andfondness.
As much as I enjoy romance, it's an unwavering devotion that I needthe most. I need to know that love which says, "I will be with youthrough it all."It is a face which can often be seen on parents and grandparents, on spouses, and even on very good friends. And it is aface which, when I gaze closely enough, I can see in it something of the face of God.
If you haven't noticed that face lately, look closely. You might besurprised where you find it!

SEXUAL SIN

Prov 6:26-29
26 For a prostitute will bring you to poverty, and sleeping with another man's wife may cost you your very life. 27 Can a man scoop fire into his lap and not be burned? 28 Can he walk on hot coals and not blister his feet? 29 So it is with the man who sleeps with another man's wife. He who embraces her will not go unpunished. NLT** Here is a great warning. What will you choose? Prostitution = Poverty OR Sleeping with another’s Spouse = Death….you will be punished! Now I talk to Christians and not to you who do not love for and live for Christ Jesus. Why do you continue committing this sin and think you will not be punished. Have you lost the fear of God on your life? Maybe you will survive this life without any punishment (I doubt it.). but you will be punished and this life is very short so the time is coming sooner than you think. Note verses 27 & 28, fire and hot coals are measured here to the reaping of this sin. Hell is way to hot and too eternal for you to trade that one enjoyable time for forever. Turn from your sin and repent from this evil destroying sin. Cut it off from this person and separate yourself from this sin.

MEMORIAL HONOR

PLEASE READ THRU BOTH STORIES

STORY NUMBER ONEMany years ago, Al Capone virtually owned Chicago. Capone wasn't famous for anything heroic. He was notorious for enmeshing the windy city in everything from bootlegged booze and prostitution to murder. Capone had a lawyer nicknamed "Easy Eddie." He was his lawyer for a good reason. Eddie was very good! In fact, Eddie's skill at legal maneuvering kept Big Al out of jail for a long time. To show his appreciation, Capone paid him very well. Not only was the money big, but Eddie got special dividends. For instance, he and his family occupied a fenced-in mansion with live-in help and all of the conveniences of the day. The estate was so large that it filled an entire Chicago City block. Eddie lived the high life of the Chicago mob and gave little consideration to the atrocity that went on around him. Eddie did have one soft spot, however. He had a son that he loved dearly. Eddie saw to it that his young son had the best of everything: clothes, cars and a good education. Nothing was withheld. Price was no object. And, despite his involvement with organized crime, Eddie even tried to teach him right from wrong. Eddie wanted his son to be a better man than he was.Yet, with all his wealth and influence, there were two things he couldn'tgive his son; that he couldn't pass on a good name and a good example. One day, Easy Eddie reached a difficult decision. Easy Eddie wanted to rectify wrongs he had done. He decided he would go to the authorities and tell the truth about Al "Scarface" Capone, clean up his tarnished name and offer his son some semblance of integrity. To do this, he would have to testify against The Mob, and he knew that the cost would be great. So, he testified. Within the year, Easy Eddie's life ended in a blaze of gunfire on a lonely Chicago Street. But in his eyes, he had given his son the greatest gift he had to offer, at the greatest price he would ever pay.
STORY NUMBER TWOWorld War II produced many heroes. One such man was Lieutenant Commander Butch O'Hare. He was a fighter pilot assigned to the aircraft carrier Lexington in the South Pacific. One day his entire squadron was sent on a mission. After he was airborne, he looked at his fuel gauge and realized that someone had forgotten to top off his fuel tank. He would not have enough fuel to complete his mission and get back to his ship. His flight leader told him to return to the carrier. Reluctantly, he dropped out of formation and headed back to the fleet. As he was returning to the mother ship he saw something that turned his blood cold. A squadron of Japanese aircraft was speeding their way toward theAmerican fleet. The American fighters were gone on a sortie, and the fleet was all but defenseless. He couldn't reach his squadron and bring them back in time to save the fleet. Nor could he warn the fleet of the approaching danger. There was only one thing to do. He must somehow divert them from the fleet. Laying aside all thoughts of personal safety, he dove into the formation of Japanese planes. Wing-mounted 50 caliber's blazed as he charged in, attacking one surprised enemy plane and then another. Butch wove in and out of the now broken formation and fired at as many planes as possible until all his ammunition was finally spent. Undaunted, he continued the assault. He dove at the planes, trying to clip a wing or tail in hopes of damaging as many enemy planes as possible and rendering them unfit to fly. Finally, theexasperated Japanese squadron took off in another direction. Deeplyrelieved, Butch O'Hare and his tattered fighter limped back to the carrier. Upon arrival he reported in and related the event surroundinghis return. The film from the gun-camera mounted on his plane told the tale. It showed the extent of Butch's daring attempt to protect his fleet. He had in fact destroyed five enemy aircraft. This took place on February 20, 1942, and for that action Butch became the Navy's first Ace of W.W.II, and the first Naval Aviator to win the Congressional Medal of Honor. A year later Butch was killed in aerial combat at the age of 29. His home town would not allow the memory of this WW II hero to fade, and today, O'Hare Airport in Chicago is named in tribute to the courage of this great man. So the next time you find yourself at O'HareInternational, give some thought to visiting Butch's memorial displaying his statue and his Medal of Honor. It's located between Terminals 1 and 2.
SO WHAT DO THESE TWO STORIES HAVE TO DO WITH EACH OTHER?Butch O'Hare was Easy Eddie's son.

FEARING GOD

Prov 1:7
7 Fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge. Only fools despise wisdom and discipline. NLT** There is a lot to write about today with all the journal readings. But in my opinion, this is the greatest of them all. “Fearing God.” Such a small little thought…. And yet this two word phrase is the reason so many men and women no longer walk among the believers of Christ. Prov. Calls it, “the beginning of knowledge.” But I believe the church has stopped fearing God. We continue to sin and do our own things in our lives and in our churches because we don’t think there will be any consequences for our sin. We have dead churches because pastors fear men more than God. We have dead marriages because young men and women choose to chose their mates instead of seeking God out and letting Him chose them. We have dead Christians because we want to serve man made religion instead of true relationship with God. And even as I write this we have a dead America because we’re afraid of offending some other religion so we deny that this country is founded on ONE TRUE Gospel and that is the Gospel that Jesus Christ came into this world to die for our sins. He was crucified on a cross for our sins. He was put into a tomb and in 3 days He rose from the dead! AND HE IS THE ONLY WAY TO HEAVEN!!! There is NO OTHER WAY other than accepting Jesus Christ as you Lord and Savior. NONE! And America is fearing man instead of God and choosing to stop proclaiming this and America will pay for the sin of not fearing God. So today if you are a Christian…. Or should I say, a God fearing Follower of Christ, call out to God and ask him to forgive our country for the sins we’ve gotten ourselves into, starting with the sin of not fearing God.

LED ASTRAY

1 Kings 11:9
9 The LORD was very angry with Solomon, for his heart had turned away from the LORD, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice. NLT** None of us are exempt from sin…. None. And yet this story continues to amaze me. God appears to Solomon twice and yet the power of lust of women takes priority over the fear of God. He gives up everything that God had planned for him and especially for his future family. I wonder how many decisions my forefathers have made that has cut me out of great and mighty blessings by the curse they set for me. Thank God He has redeemed me from the curse of the law through the death of His son Jesus Christ. It is my job however to break all curses set on me and my family from past decisions made. Again, here is the perfect picture that even this worlds riches and all this world has to offer is nothing compared to the joy of living for Jesus Christ. (just read Ecclesiastes and hear of all of Solomon’s book of whining and moaning)

TROUBLE!

2 Chron 8:11
11 Solomon moved his wife, Pharaoh's daughter, from the City of David to the new palace he had built for her. He said, "My wife must not live in King David's palace, for the Ark of the LORD has been there, and it is holy ground." NLT
** Ok, so anytime you can’t bring something (relationships, lifestyle, etc) to or leave something in the presence of God, something is wrong. As I read this scripture I get RED FLAGS flying everywhere…. I’m continually amazed at Christians who dabble in the world by dating or ESPECIALLY marrying non-believers. This is the beginning of the end for Solomon and by the way, if Solomon couldn’t handle dating or marrying non-followers of God being the wisest person in the world, why do you think you can handle it? Paul is very clear… “Come out from among them (world) and be separate.” Next time you get ready to make a relationship decision, ask yourself this. “can this relationship handle Holy Ground?”

FUNNY FRIDAY - LONG HAIR

A teenage boy had just gotten his driver's license and inquired of his father as to when they could discuss his use of the car.

His father said he'd make a deal with his son: "You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible a little, and get your hair cut. Then we'll talk about the car."

The boy thought about that for a moment, decided he'd settle for the offer, and they agreed on it.

After about six weeks his father said, "Son, you've brought your grades up and I've observed that you have been studying your Bible, but I'm disappointed you haven't gotten your hair cut."

The boy said, "You know, Dad, I've been thinking about that, and I've noticed in my studies of the Bible that Samson had long hair, John the Baptist had long hair, Moses had long hair...and there's even strong evidence that Jesus had long hair."
To this his father replied, "Did you also notice they all walked everywhere they went?"

IF MY PEOPLE?......

2 Chron 7:13-15
13 " If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people, 14 and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 15 " Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to the prayer offered in this place. NASU** I’ve always quoted and heard people quote 2 Chr. 7:14 but when you read the previous chapters before it and the verse before it, you realize God was warning His people about sinning and leaving His commandments. It’s very clear that God wants to bless His people (including you and me!) however God makes it very clear throughout this chapter that our sin will bring destruction to our lives. Today, I choose to focus on the goodness of God and not the discipline. I choose to walk away from sin and live in His righteousness. Then I don’t have to worry about what bad things might come because I’m living in the good things He has done.

EARLY MEMORIAL DAY STORY

EAGLE BASE, Bosnia and Herzegovina (Army News Service, May 22, 2002) -- It was raining "cats and dogs," and I was late for physical training. Traffic was backed up at Fort Campbell, Ky., and was moving way too slowly. I was probably going to be late and I was growing more and more impatient.

The pace slowed almost to a standstill as I passed Memorial Grove, the site built to honor the soldiers who died in the Gander airplane crash, the worst redeployment accident in the history of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). Because it was close to Memorial Day, a small American flag had been placed in the ground next to each soldier's memorial plaque.

My concern at the time, however, was getting past the bottleneck, getting out of the rain and getting to PT on time. All of a sudden, infuriatingly, just as the traffic was getting started again, the car in front of me stopped. A soldier, a private of course, jumped out in the pouring rain and ran over toward the grove.

I couldn't believe it! This knucklehead was holding up everyone for who knows what kind of prank. Horns were honking. I waited to see the butt-chewing that I wanted him to get for making me late.

He was getting soaked to the skin. His BDUs were plastered to his frame. I watched as he ran up to one of the memorial plaques, picked up the small American flag that had fallen to the ground in the wind and the rain, and set it upright again. Then, slowly, he came to attention, saluted, ran back to his car, and drove off.

I'll never forget that incident. That soldier, whose name I will never know, taught me more about duty, honor, and respect than a hundred books or a thousand lectures.

That simple salute -- that single act of honoring his fallen brother and his flag -- encapsulated all the Army values in one gesture for me. It said, "I will never forget. I will keep the faith. I will finish the mission. I am an American soldier."

I thank God for examples like that. And on this Memorial Day, I will remember all those who paid the ultimate price for my freedom, and one private, soaked to the skin, who honored them.
(Note: The author, Capt. John Rasmussen, is now a chaplain with Multinational Division North in Bosnia. Story courtesy of Army News Service.)

TRUE WORSHIP

2 Chron 5:13-14
13 The trumpeters and singers joined in unison, as with one voice, to give praise and thanks to the LORD. Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals and other instruments, they raised their voices in praise to the LORD and sang: "He is good; his love endures forever." Then the temple of the LORD was filled with a cloud, 14 and the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the temple of God. NIV** This is true worship. When God’s people join together with one purpose, one voice and that is to give praise and thanks to God, it moves Him! When we come together, if we could just keep our mind set and remember it’s not about US but it’s about HIM. Not only will He receive TRUE praise and worship but all of our needs will be met because we decided to get our priorites in order and seek first the kingdom of God. I also believe that when we learn to seek God first and place Him at number one in our lives, we would not live tired lives as we do. The scripture is very clear when it says “they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles. They shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” O LORD TEACH ME TO WAIT! Oh, and by the way..... the result of true worship? The presence of God was so strong that they couldn't even stand... Now I want that.

OUR FUTURE BUISNESSMEN :)

A very successful businessman had a meeting with his new son-in-law.

"I love my daughter, and now I welcome you into the family," said the man. "To show you how much we care for you, I'm making you a 50-50 partner in my business. All you have to do is go to the factory every day and learn the operations."

The son-in-law interrupted, "Oh, um, I actually hate factories. Can't stand the noise."

"I see," replied the father-in-law. "Well, then you'll work in the office and take charge of some of the operations."

"I hate office work, too" said the son-in-law. "I can't stand being stuck behind a desk all day."

"Wait a minute," said the father-in-law. "I just made you half-owner of a moneymaking organization, but you don't like factories and won't work in a office. What am I going to do with you?"

"Easy," said the young man. "Buy me out."

CHRISTIAN BY BIRTH

Rom 2:28-29

28 For you are not a true Jew just because you were born of Jewish parents or because you have gone through the Jewish ceremony of circumcision. 29 No, a true Jew is one whose heart is right with God.
NLT
This verse reminds me of Americans. So many people believe they are Christians just because they live in the USA! So people go around doing good things and thinking that everything is ok with their eternal resting place. The bible is VERY clear about this. Look at this passage from Ephesians:
Eph 2:8-10
8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. NIV The WORKS come AFTER the GRACE of God. Listen, it can’t be any easier than this. Why do we make it more difficult than it is? Now I will say that this country was built on Christian foundations and we should never forget that. (it seems that people that are non believers in Christ Jesus are trying or have re-written our history and I would expect this from cowards that do not have a back bone to stand up for what is right.) But just because American was founded on Christian values does not make you a Christian any more than swimming in the lake makes you a fish! If we are Christians (which means “Christ – Like”) we should be accused of “acting like Christ” by other people. But even acting like Christ doesn’t get you to heaven. Only thru your coming to Jesus and asking Him to forgive you of your sins and asking Him to live in you and thru you AND THEN act like a Christian, do good things for others etc. “God so loved the world that He gave His only son that whoever believes in Him would not perish but have everlasting life”…… No works added.

EVERYONE SEES GOD

Rom 1:18-20
18 But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who push the truth away from themselves. 19 For the truth about God is known to them instinctively. God has put this knowledge in their hearts. 20 From the time the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky and all that God made. They can clearly see his invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse whatsoever for not knowing God. NLT
Everyone has been contacted by God in one way or another. The bible clearly states that there is NO EXCUSE for not knowing God. This definitely answers questions that we’ve always had about those who the gospel never reaches and they die. Well the scriptures are clear that God makes sure that each one of them will know that He exist. God does not want ANYONE to perish in hell, He has gone out of His way to bring salvation to EVERYONE. What an awesome God I serve! Without Him my life would be most miserable and I’d be lost for eternity without this loving savior. Thank you Jesus for dyeing for my sins and making a way for me to live with you FOREVER!!!!

TRUE CHARACTER

I read this from my Foursquare office and thought I'd pass it on.... great story:
She had never hit a home run in her life, being only 5 feet 2 inches tall. Sara Tucholsky played for Western Oregon and was involved in a conference championship double-header against Central Washington. Then it happened. She hit one over the fence with two runners on. This hit would propel Sarah's team to win the game and the possibility of advancing to the NCAA play-offs. What she did not plan on was injuring her knee as she rounded first base. Sara tore her ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and lay on the ground, hugging first base. According to the rules of collegiate play, if her teammates touched her, it would only go down as a single, jeopardizing the game. Everyone froze. That's when Mallory Holtman, from the opposing team, got a bright idea. She asked the umpire if her team could pick Sara up, help her touch all the bases, then carry her across home plate. The umpire explained that there was no rule against that, though it would give the other team an additional run and the game. Without hesitation, Mallory and another teammate picked up their injured opponent and rounded the bases with Sara in their arms. There were a few cheers, but mostly tears as the opposing team decided to step up and do the right thing. What a statement of character! Inside a chain-link fence, with fewer than 100 people looking on, a group of young college girls made a monumental decision. Their story is being told around the world (click on highlighted words to see in on video). In a time when stories of selfishness and violence permeate the newspapers and airwaves, it's refreshing to hear of this spontaneous generosity. These girls made a decision, laying aside their own desires and hopes of winning a conference championship. Ultimately, they left a legacy that will far outlive simply winning a softball game or even a conference championship. Life is defined by some people in terms of wins and losses. Still others define life by decisions made in the tensions of an everyday journey that reveal a person's true values. People of "The Way" were known in the first century as the ones who would "turn the other cheek" and "go the extra mile." What do you want to be known for?

SMARTEST BOY ALIVE

1 Kings 3:7
7 "Now, O LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. NIV
And God probably said… “good, you’re exactly the type of person I need to rule for me!” How many times have we chosen people to do things because we think they are qualified to finish the task. There are so many smart people in the world that know nothing at all! I think on of the smartest people I know is a boy by the name of Marquis Wood. He is 10 years old and has downs syndrome and he is willing to do whatever the Lord tells him to do. He believes in God and believes God can do anything He wants to…. Now that’s smart and wisdom at it’s best. Thanks Marquis for teaching me how to trust in God.

SOLOMON CLEANS HOUSE

Ok, so David gives the last instructions to his son Solomon on what to do with everyone that has done him wrong. As soon as David dies, Solomon takes charge and begins to clean house and gets rid of everyone who walked unworthy of his kingdom. Even some of the greatest men who was with his father was killed and taken out. Often times God calls us to new things and great changes and we don’t get rid of stuff in our lives that pull us down and keeps us from completing the new vision or purpose. Sometimes it requires us to get rid of old friends that keep dragging us back to our old ways of life and sometimes it even means we have to find a new job. The important part is that we remain faithful to Jesus and stay obedient to Him and His Word spoken to us.

LIFT UP YOUR EYES

May 16th 2008

1 Thess 5:4-8
4 But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. 5 You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. NIV

The return of Jesus Christ should be no surprise to anyone who is a follower of Christ Jesus. Matter of fact, we should be the ones who KNOW when His coming draws near. I tell you today that it is very clear or should I say that it SHOULD be very clear today with all the stuff going on around us that Jesus’ return is very near. I’ve even spoke to people who don’t know Jesus and they even say that they can feel that something different is going on. Even as I write this right now, it has been predicted today we will see temperatures around 90 degreese in seattle on May 16th!!! Storms destroying, earthquakes, famine, disease…. You name it and it is happening all around us. So what is a Follower of Christ to do? Jesus said to occupy until He comes, but He also said to His disciples just before He left this earth, “when you see all these things come to pass, lift up your eyes for your redemption draws near.” So that’s what I’m going to do. Occupy myself with all the work of the Lord that I can get my hands on and keep my focus, my vision lifted up toward the coming of Jesus Christ. Even so, come quickly Jesus…

IN CHARGE OF SOMETHING?

This morning journal was nothing more than a list of people who were in charge of something.
So and So was in charge of this thing & so and so was in charge of that thing and it goes on and on describing people who where put in charge of something in David’s kingdom. “In Charge” it’s amazing but true that almost everything needs someone to be in charge of it. Scripture is very clear that “without vision the people perish.” I would go on to say that without someone in charge the people and confused and they perish. I believe that everyone is in charge of something even if it is their own life. Although I just read on Craig’s list yesterday that a person was selling her soul for $60.000. dollars! They were giving up everything they had charge over and I believe if we loose charge of ourselves we are deeply in trouble. No matter what we are in charge of, we must be the best at being in charge of what we are in charge of. Not to confuse us any more I do want to say that even though each one of us are in charge of something or someone, we each one of us have someone who is in charge of us! When I finally stand before my savior Jesus Christ, I want Him to look at all that He gave me to be in charge of and see that I had accomplished everything exactly the way He wanted it done.

Sometimes going thru hard things is the only way to increase our faith. As I was reading my journal today, this verse stood out to me
1 Thess 3:1010 as we night and day keep praying most earnestly that we may see your face, and may complete what is lacking in your faith?NASU
Amazing! Each one of us can complete someone else's faith.... Maybe it is in what we say to someone or sometimes just being a thorn in the flesh. So I thought I would share the story below with you because I think it shows us that chasing after something is not the answer but waiting for something is. (some of you get your tissue handy) It is a long story but well worth reading.

John Powell, a professor at Loyola University in Chicago writes about a student named Tommy in his Theology of Faith class:
Some twelve years ago, I stood watching my university students file into the classroom for our first session in the Theology of Faith. That was the day I first saw Tommy. My eyes and my mind both blinked. He was combing his long flaxen hair, which hung six inches below his shoulders. It was the first time I had ever seen a boy with hair that long. I guess it was just coming into fashion then. I know in my mind that it isn't what's on your head but what's in it that counts; but on that day I was unprepared and my emotions flipped. I immediately filed Tommy under 'S' for strange, very strange.
Tommy turned out to be the "atheist in residence" in my Theology of Faith course. He constantly objected to, smirked at, or whined about the possibility of an unconditionally loving Father/God. We lived with each other in relative peace for one semester, although I admit he was, for me at times, a serious pain in the back pew.
When he came up at the end of the course to turn in his final exam, he asked in a slightly cynical tone, "Do you think I'll ever find God?"
I decided instantly on a little shock therapy. "No!" I said very emphatically.
"Oh," he responded, "I thought that was the product you were pushing."
I let him get five steps from the classroom door, then called out, "Tommy! I don't think you'll ever find Him, but I am absolutely certain that He will find you!"
He shrugged a little and left my class and my life. I felt slightly disappointed at the thought that he had missed my clever line: "He will find you!" At least I thought it was clever.
Later I heard that Tommy had graduated, and I was duly grateful. Then a sad report came. I heard Tommy had terminal cancer. Before I could search him out, he came to see me.
When he walked into my office, his body was very badly wasted, and the long hair had all fallen out as a result of chemotherapy, but his eyes were bright, and his voice was firm for the first time, I believe.
"Tommy, I've thought about you so often. I hear you are sick," I blurted out.
"Oh, yes, very sick. I have cancer in both lungs. It's a matter of weeks."
"Can you talk about it, Tom?" I asked.
"Sure, what would you like to know?" he replied.
"What's it like to be only twenty-four and dying?"
"Well, it could be worse."
"Like what?"
"Well, like being fifty and having no values or ideals; like being fifty and thinking that booze, seducing women, and making money are the real biggies in life."
(I began to look through my mental file cabinet under 'S' where I had filed Tommy as strange. It seems as though everybody I try to reject by classification, God sends back into my life to educate me.)
"But what I really came to see you about," Tom said, "is something you said to me on the last day of class."
(He remembered!)
He continued, "I asked you if you thought I would ever find God, and you said, 'No!'which surprised me. Then you said, 'But He will find you.' I thought about that a lot, even though my search for God was hardly intense at that time.
(My clever line... He thought about that a lot!)
"But when the doctors removed a lump from my groin and told me that it was malignant, that's when I got serious about locating God. And when the malignancy spread into my vital organs, I really began banging bloody fists against the bronze doors of heaven, but God did not come out. In fact, nothing happened. Did you ever try something for a long time with great effort and with no success? You get psychologically glutted; fed up with trying. And then you quit. Well, one day I woke up, and instead of throwing a few more futile appeals over that high brick wall to a God who may or may not be there, I just quit. I decided that I didn't really care about God, about an afterlife, or anything like that. I decided to spend what time I had left doing something more profitable.
"I thought about you and your class, and I remembered something else you had said: 'The essential sadness is to go through life without loving. But it would be almost equally sad to go through life and leave this world without ever telling those you loved that you had loved them.'
So, I began with the hardest one, my Dad. He was reading the newspaper when I approached him.
"Dad."
"Yes, what?" he asked without lowering the newspaper.
"Dad, I would like to talk with you."
"Well, talk."
"I mean it's really important."
The newspaper came down three slow inches. "What is it?"
"Dad, I love you. I just wanted you to know that."
(Tom smiled at me and said it with obvious satisfaction, as though he felt a warm and secret joy flowing inside of him.)
"The newspaper fluttered to the floor. Then my father did two things I could never remember him ever doing before. He cried and he hugged me. We talked all night, even though he had to go to work the next morning. It felt so good to be close to my father, to see his tears, to feel his hug, to hear him say that he loved me. "
It was easier with my mother and little brother. They cried with me, too, and we hugged each other, and started saying real nice things to each other. We shared the things we had been keeping secret for so many years. I was only sorry about one thing - that I had waited so long. Here I was, just beginning to open up to all the people I had actually been close to.
"Then, one day, I turned around and God was there! He didn't come to me when I pleaded with Him. I guess I was like an animal trainer holding out a hoop; 'C'mon, jump through. C'mon, I'll give You three days, three weeks.' Apparently God does things in His own way and at His own hour. But the important thing is that He was there. He found me. You were right. He found me even after I stopped looking for Him."
"Tommy," I practically gasped, "I think you are saying something very important and much more universal than you realize. To me, at least, you are saying that the surest way to find God is not to make Him a private possession, a problem solver, or an instant consolation in time of need, but rather to open up to love. You know, the Apostle John said that. He said: 'God is love, and anyone who lives in love is living with God and God is living in him.'
"Tom, could I ask you a favor? You know, when I had you in class you were a real pain. But (laughingly) you can make it all up to me now. Would you come into my present Theology of Faith course and tell them what you have just told me? If I told them the same thing it wouldn't be half as effective as if you were to tell them."
"Ooh ... I was ready for you, but I don't know if I'm ready for your class."
"Tom, think about it. If and when you are ready, give me a call."
In a few days, Tom called, said he was ready for the class, that he wanted to do that for God and for me. So we scheduled a date, but he never made it. He had another appointment, far more important than the one with me and my class.
Of course, his life was not really ended by his death, only changed. He made the great step from faith into vision. He found a life far more beautiful than the eye of man has ever seen or the ear of man has ever heard, or the mind of man has ever imagined.
Before he died, we talked one last time. "I'm not going to make it to your class," he said.
"I know, Tom."
"Will you tell them for me? Will you... tell the whole world for me?"
"I will, Tom. I'll tell them. I'll do my best."
So, to all of you who have been kind enough to hear this simple statement about love, thank you for listening. And to you, Tommy, somewhere in the sunlit, verdant hills of heaven - I told them, Tommy, as best I could.
If this story means anything to you, please pass it on to a friend or two. It is a true story and is not enhanced for publicity purposes.
With thanks,
John Powell, Professor Loyola University, Chicago

OFFERINGS THAT COST

2 Sam 24:24-25
24 However, the king said to Araunah, "No, but I will surely buy it from you for a price, for I will not offer burnt offerings to the LORD my God which cost me nothing." So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. NASU

It’s always easy to offer an offering that didn’t cost us anything. I think of this as the same way as when someone rents a car or goes to buy something on someone else’s credit card. We often get careless with the car does not belong to us because we know we will not have to drive it any more nor put up with the consequences after we misuse it. David realized that if he didn’t have to pay for the offering he was going to offer, that it would not show God that this offering and the presentation of it means a lot to him. So it is with us. When I give to God an offering or a vow, I want God to know that it was something that meant a lot to me and that it cost me a lot so He would see how much I love Him and how serious my offering is.

MAKE DISCIPLES

Matt 28:18-1918 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,NIV

Last words of Jesus? “Go and make disciples!” He says it with all His authority in mind and yet because He died for the church, He gives the church the power of attorney to speak His authority. It’s clear here that Jesus shows where the authority is coming from and what we are to do now that we can walk in it. “Go and make disciples!” There is great work to be done because to just read the words “go and make disciples” is not as easily as it sounds. This is a life time achievement to make disciples.
Webster’s def. is: 1: one who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrines of another: as a: one of the twelve in the inner circle of Christ's followers according to the Gospel accounts b: a convinced adherent of a school or individual.
I like the letter (b) “convinced individual.” I have become a disciple of Jesus Christ and my question is have you? Have you not become a convinced individual? Have you studies the scriptures? Can you not see that Jesus Christ is God by all the truth strung around you?
1 John 5:20-21
20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true — even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. 21 Dear children, keep yourselves from idols. NIV

The Worst of the Worst

Matt 27:2121 "Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" asked the governor.
"Barabbas," they answered. NIV

Ok, so here Pilot chooses the worst of the worst to compare with Jesus KNOWING that surely the people would choose Jesus over someone who would terrorize their neighborhoods. But the people choose the worst of the worst and would pay the price for crucifying Jesus. Often times we give up great things in our lives and futures for the selfish gratifying moments that we choose. Here was Jesus, who if one would just follow and obey, offered peace, joy, comfort and life to the fullest! And on the other side stood Barabbas the thief, murderer and everything that represented evil. And they choose? Evil, corruption and sinfulness over LIFE. Oh that we would just take time to examine our surroundings before we make such quick choices.

How Do You Talk?

Matt 26:73
73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, "Surely you too are one of them; for even the way you talk gives you away." NASU

Weather it was his accent (which was the reason) or just the way he carried himself, Peter was a person that stood out in the crowd. He was a spokes person for anything and everything. And, it brought along with it good and bad. I really want to be a person that is accused of being with Jesus because of the way I speak. I want my accent to be a heavenly one and I want to hang out with Christ so much that I start sounding and acting like Him.

As The World Turns OR Days of our lives?

Oh my gosh! Deceit, death, lies, rape, murder….. the list goes on! All Hollywood needs to do to get fresh ideas for new movies is read the Old Testament. AND what is this about David? For a man that seems to be such a great warrior he sure seems to give up so easily and run from the palace to let Absalom take over. We can learn so much from the last two days of journal readings if we can just pay attention on who is the good guys and who is the bad guys. One lesson learned here is that no matter how good you are (as in David’s case) or how good of a king you are, you will pay the price for sin in your life. Just notice David’s life before he committed adultery and then look at it after and you’ll see that sin NEVER pays off. It may be a while but the debt collector for sin will show up and demand payment one way or another.
